Research Princess Máxima Center on childhood cancer and genetic predisposition

Physician-researchers Jette Bakhuizen and Sebastian Bon are conducting research to improve diagnostics for genetic predisposition to childhood cancer. The results of these studies have led to changes in genetic testing policies. A video has also been made for children and parents explaining what genetic testing is and what the advantages and disadvantages are.
In DNA testing, we look at a child’s genetic material to see what changes have contributed to the development of cancer cells,’ explains Jette Bakhuizen. ‘We look at both tumor cells and healthy cells that reflect the child’s genetic predisposition. This helps not only to make an accurate diagnosis, but also to determine the best treatment.’
‘It is important to understand that DNA testing of normal cells can not only help the child with cancer, but also be of value to family members. If we find a hereditary predisposition, relatives can be monitored, which can help with early detection of cancer. This opens up possibilities for better treatments,’ says Sebastian Bon.
Jette Bakhuizen: ‘At diagnosis, only a limited number of cancer predisposition genes will be tested, only those that can really help in diagnosis and in choosing the right treatment. If the pediatric oncologist or parents have questions about genetic predisposition, a child can still be referred to the clinical geneticist. Because we believe it is important to investigate new forms of genetic predisposition in cancer with cancer, we will ask all children and parents for their permission to participate in scientific research about genetic predisposition.’

Olympic champion Maarten van der Weijden swims one last time, now for the Máxima
Maarten van der Weijden is putting on his swimming suit one last time to raise money for cancer research. From 17 to 22 August, he will swim an incredible 270 kilometers through 22 cities, with the Princess Máxima Center as his final destination. With this special challenge, he is raising money for pioneering research into the immediate and long-term effects of childhood cancer.

New exit for construction traffic at the Utrecht Science Park
Various construction works are taking place in the north-west cluster of Utrecht Science Park. This is the area where the Minnaert Building and the Buys Ballot Building, amongst others, are located. To ensure that construction traffic flows more safely and efficiently through the area, a new exit is being constructed from Sorbonnelaan to Leuvenlaan.
