On Saturday June 6, the Hubrecht Institute celebrated its 110th anniversary with a festive open day. Around 700 visitors explored a wide range of activities both inside and outside the institute around the theme ‘Zooming in on Cells’.

The day was filled with opportunities to explore science. Visitors of all ages enthusiastically took part in hands-on experiences, extracting their own DNA, tuning in to RadioCellFM! and becoming a virus that infects a cell. Visitors also got a glimpse behind the scenes of the institute as they explored the laboratories, where they could have a go at pipetting themselves, see the pipetting robots in action and look at zebrafish embryos under the microscope.

Thanks to several great collaborations, there was plenty to do beyond the Hubrecht Institute’s own labs as well. Wim van Egmond helped visitors build their own Antoni van Leeuwenhoek microscope, and NEMO brought its interactive Holland’s Next Embryo Model show, in which visitors discussed their questions, concerns and ideas about embryo models. Many interesting perspectives were shared.

Inside, visitors could enjoy short talks on stage about the remarkable axolotl, research on embryo implantation, a day in the life of a PhD student, heart regeneration and more. Both adults and children were enthusiastic and keen to learn, asking many questions. The fact-or-fiction game on stage was especially interactive. Science communicator Anna Gimbrère, who hosted the open day, ensured a fun atmosphere and smooth transitions between the talks. She even arranged a special meeting between Geert Kops, director of the Hubrecht Institute, and Ambrosius Hubrecht, after whom the institute is named.

The atmosphere throughout the day was warm and welcoming. Visitors unanimously commented on the friendly and enthusiastic interactions with the volunteers. Overall, the Hubrecht Institute looks back on a day full of curiosity, dialogue and engagement. It was a great success!
