Utrecht science park no.1 in ew “top locations research 2023” (non-profit facilities)

The annual “Top Locations survey” by EW Magazine and Bureau Louter shows that Utrecht Science Park scores highly as a top location. In the category “Non-profit facilities”, Utrecht Science Park even scores a number 1 position (list “Top 20 hotspots – 1km2 around zip code”).
Utrecht Science Park is the largest science park in the Netherlands with over 30,000 employees and 55,000 students. Renowned medical centres, knowledge institutions and companies work intensively together to develop and apply groundbreaking science and solutions in the fields of health care, life sciences and sustainability. Some of the examples are Utrecht University, Hogeschool Utrecht, UMC Utrecht, Prinses Máxima Centrum, RIVM, Hubrecht Institute and R&D companies such as Genmab, Merus and Bilthoven Biologicals.
As the largest science park with so many organisations on a few square metres, it is not surprising that Utrecht Science Park scores so high. But it is great to see this confirmed by this survey as well. This unique knowledge concentration involving intensive cooperation has great added value,”
said Jan Henk van der Velden, director-director of the Utrecht Science Park Foundation.
Looking more broadly at the region as a whole, Utrecht also scores well in the survey. In the ranking of “Top regions”, region Utrecht (city region) takes 2nd place when all sectors are combined. Within the “Information-oriented” and “People-oriented” sectors, Utrecht even scores best. This is also in line with previous studies, such as the one conducted by the European Commission in 2023, in which the Utrecht region was voted Europe’s most competitive region.
The “Top Locations” study by EW and Bureau Louter looks at the economic performance of municipalities and regions.
