Official opening of the renovated Coimbra Square and Buurthuys at Utrecht Science Park

On Tuesday, 2 June, the renewed Coimbra Square and the new Buurthuys were officially opened at Utrecht Science Park. During a festive gathering, residents, students, staff, and partners came together to celebrate and officially open these new community spaces.
The opening marks the completion of a process that began earlier this year with a broad participation campaign. Residents, students, and staff were invited to contribute ideas for the redesign of the square and vote for one of two proposed designs. More than 2,100 people cast their votes. The design titled “Sheltered Garden” received the most votes and has now been brought to life.
The renewed Coimbra Square offers more space for social interaction, relaxation, and greenery. Together with the Buurthuys, the new community centre created by and for residents of Utrecht Science Park, it forms a central gathering place where people can meet and organise activities.
The opening also highlighted the establishment of the Utrecht Science Park Housing Collective (WCU). With the new community centre, the redesigned square, and an active residents’ organisation, Utrecht Science Park continues to strengthen a connected and engaged community.
These new facilities were made possible through the commitment of resident representatives and collaboration with various partners across Utrecht Science Park. From now on, both the Buurthuys and the renewed Coimbra Square are open and accessible to everyone.
