New exit for construction traffic at the Utrecht Science Park
Various construction works are taking place in the north-west cluster of Utrecht Science Park. This is the area where the Minnaert Building and the Buys Ballot Building, amongst others, are located. To ensure that construction traffic flows more safely and efficiently through the area, a new exit is being constructed from Sorbonnelaan to Leuvenlaan.
This new exit will provide a fixed one-way route for construction traffic within this area. Construction vehicles will enter the area via the existing access route along Budapestlaan and leave the area via the new exit on Sorbonnelaan. The works will take place between 17 and 28 August.
The benefits of the new route
- Minimising disruption to staff, students and visitors to neighbouring buildings.
- Reducing unnecessary traffic movements by construction vehicles in the area.
- Avoiding, as far as possible, large construction vehicles having to turn round or manoeuvre.
- Preventing construction traffic from travelling back along Budapestlaan to Leuvenlaan.
- Improving road safety at and around the Budapestlaan–Leuvenlaan junction.
Design of the construction exit
The exit will be specifically designed for construction traffic. This will include the installation of a bus gate, additional surfacing, road markings and signage. The design ensures that construction vehicles can enter Leuvenlaan from Sorbonnelaan in a controlled manner.
The construction exit will be controlled by traffic light systems. When construction traffic is exiting, other traffic (including cyclists and pedestrians) will be shown a red light. Construction traffic will, of course, remain particularly alert to cyclists and pedestrians crossing at this location.
A clearly marked, separate route will be created for cyclists turning off Leuvenlaan onto Sorbonnelaan.
How will this affect you?
There may be some disruption during construction. The buildings and facilities in the area will remain accessible. Once the construction exit is in use, traffic in the area is expected to become calmer and more orderly, as construction vehicles will no longer need to drive back through the area.
