During 2017 and 2018, many construction projects have take place at Utrecht Science Park. For example, the new tram line, the new building of the ‘Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu’ (National Institute for Health and Environment), the Medicines Evaluation Board (RIVM/CBG)’, the Princess Maxima Center for Pediatric Oncology, GenmabHogeschool Utrecht and the faculty of Geosciences of the University of Utrecht. These construction projects put a great pressure on the liveability of the area. In order to keep Utrecht Science Park viable and attractive during this period, the Utrecht Science Park Quality of Life Fund was established for the period 2017 and 2018.

The Quality of Life Fund was a virtual funding program, not an institute but a collaboration between Gemeente Utrecht, SSH, Province Utrecht, BAM and the foundation Utrecht Science Park

Any application had to meet certain standards, an application had to:

  • Enlarge or strengthen the livability of the USP;
  • Fit within the theme of ‘Healthy Urban Living’: a healthy and durable life;
  • Strengthen the USP community: has a wide reach and gets people to connect;
  • Has other financial sources which prove support for the idea;
  • Be a nonprofit initiative;
  • Open and available for everyone.
