Universities

The strong knowledge base of the Utrecht Science Park is formed by the numerous knowledge institutions located here.

Utrecht University

Utrecht University is one of the world’s top universities. The Shanghai Ranking ranks the university number one in the Netherlands, 12 in Europe and 48 globally. According to the Times Higher Education Ranking the university is in place 68, the highest position of any Dutch university. The university has 7 faculties:

  • Humanities
  • Law, Economics and Governance
  • Geosciences
  • Social and Behavioural Sciences
  • Science
  • Medicine / University Medical Centre Utrecht (UMC Utrecht)
  • Veterinary Medicine

In addition to the faculties it is also home to the University College Utrecht, the international Honors College of Utrecht University.
In 2011-2012 the university offered 45 bachelor’s programmes and 169 master’s programmes. It has over 30,000 students and employs over 5400 staff (FTE).

University Medical Centre Utrecht

The University Medical Centre Utrecht is the largest public healthcare organisation in the Netherlands and consists of:

  • AZU (adult hospital)
  • Wilhelmina Children’s Hospital
  • Central Military Hospital
  • Utrecht University’s Faculty of Medicine

With more than 10,000 staff it aims to continuously improve its ability to offer effective healthcare using people and knowledge as building blocks. Each year the hospital looks after more than 400,000 patients. There are also 3000 students being trained in various Life Sciences directions.

The core activities of the UMC Utrecht are:

  • Offering (health) care that demands special knowledge and expertise;
  • Performing leading scientific research;
  • Offering excellent education and training to students, doctors, researchers and other (health) care providers.


Utrecht University of Applied Sciences

Utrecht University of Applied Sciences is a knowledge institution that through top quality education and research focuses on innovation and professionalization of business practice and the development of talent. In doing so it contributes to the social, cultural and economic development of an open, just and sustainable society.

Utrecht University of Applied Sciences has six faculties:

  • Communications & Journalism
  • Economics & Management
  • Education and Pedagogy
  • Healthcare
  • Society & Law
  • Nature & Technology

In 2010 the Utrecht University of Applied Sciences offered 80 bachelor’s programmes and 27 master’s programmes, and taught more than 38,000 students with over 3400 staff.
