Focus areas
R&D at Utrecht Science Park (USP) focuses on two main themes, both of which contribute to improving the quality of life:
- Life Sciences
- Sustainability
The knowledge and expertise of the partners and companies and other organisations on site or nearby, combined with state-of-the-art laboratories and other important facilities, are the perfect base for top performances in research, development and innovation.
Life Sciences
Utrecht excels in Life Sciences. In fact, Utrecht Life Sciences research – both fundamental and clinical – competes with the best in the world. At USP the emphasis is on themes that are crucially important for our society:
- One Health
- Cancer, Stem Cells & Regenerative Medicine
Most importantly, all the important players are located in a relatively small area:
- a university hospital
- a children’s hospital
- a science and medicine faculty
- the only veterinary medicine faculty in the Netherlands
The USP is also home to the Hubrecht Institute, an international centre for cutting-edge fundamental research, The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), Danone and numerous other parties, including Genmab, TNO, Glaxo SmithKline, Merus Biopharmaceuticals and Crossbeta Biosciences.
Sustainability
The USP is the crossroads for a broad spectrum of knowledge and expertise in sustainability. This sustainability relates to both the physical environment and society. The Utrecht Sustainability Institute (USI) plays a leading role here. The USP enjoys a leading international profile in topics like the bio-based economy and water thanks to its partnership in the European network ‘Climate Knowledge and Innovation Community’ (Climate-KIC).
