The scientific and business communities have found common ground in the development of alternatives to the use of antibiotics in livestock farming. After agreeing to a scientific ‘proof of principle’, the veterinary pharmaceutical industry has begun actively participating in the Immuno Valley ALTANT programme. ALTANT stands for ALTernatives to ANTibiotics, and works to develop innovative solutions to replace the use of antibiotics in livestock farming. The programme is a collaborative effort by Utrecht University’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, the University Medical Centre Utrecht, Pfizer Animal Health and MSD Animal Health, coordinated by the Immuno Valley foundation and financed in part by the ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation. The total project budget amounts to approximately 18 million Euros,
of which half is provided by the industry partners. This makes the partners the
front runners in the new Top Sectors Policy within the focus area Life Sciences &
Health. The parties recently signed the contract for the two projects, which may
be able to produce the first alternatives within the next four or five years.

The Fall 2011 edition of the Venture Challenge took a surprising turn when two winners were announced yesterday during the Dutch Life Sciences & Health conference in Media Plaza, Utrecht. Life sciences ventures Muscabiotics and Prognostix will split the €25,000 prize money. Muscabiotics focuses on the treatment and prevention of infectious diseases in livestock. Prognostix develops innovative diagnostic tests for prostate cancer.

Nieuwe faciliteiten voor Life Sciences bedrijven op het Utrecht Science Park
Kadans Vastgoed heeft met de Universiteit Utrecht een raamovereenkomst gesloten voor de aankoop van het Alexander Numangebouw en de realisatie van een nieuw specifiek bedrijfsverzamelgebouw ten behoeve van bedrijven actief in de Life Sciences sector. Circa één derde van het totale vloeroppervlak van het Alexander Numangebouw en de nieuwbouw met een minimum van 5.000 m2 zal beschikbaar zijn voor startende en jonge bedrijven (incubator functie). Zowel Kadans als het Utrecht Science Park hopen dat er met de nieuwe ontwikkeling voldoende huisvestingsmogelijkheden zijn voor startende bedrijven en ook de juiste accommodatie geboden wordt voor (internationale) Life Sciences bedrijven die zich op het Utrecht Science Park willen vestigen.
